Adjustment Disorders, Grief Reactions & Burnout.

Critical life events (losses through separation or bereavement, conflicts, etc.) or unusually prolonged burdens or life changes (living alone following loss, a new workplace or changed professional demands, leaving the parental home or other threshold situations in life, including societal stressors such as those during and following the COVID-19 pandemic) trigger stress reactions that, in the absence of available coping mechanisms, may lead to what are known as adjustment disorders. In the narrower sense, these are shorter (up to one month) or longer (up to two years) depressive reactions (including grief reactions), mixed states of depressive and anxiety symptoms, or behavioural disturbances (e.g. in adolescents following losses).

Out of balance

When burden makes us ill.

Exhaustion states, commonly known as burnout, are also understood as reactions to problems or difficulties in coping with life (primarily occupational stress).

The symptoms of the adjustment disorders and exhaustion states mentioned above manifest — like those of depressive episodes — at the emotional and physical level, the cognitive level, and the level of social relationships. Although their severity is less pronounced than that of depressive disorders, if left untreated, adjustment disorders and exhaustion states can develop into depressive episodes that may turn out to be moderate to severe.

Recognising severe reactions.

A particularly severe reaction to a traumatic event may be the development of a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. We provide separate information about this clinical condition and its treatment.

Treatment at Sanima Klinik.

A cross-method therapeutic approach in our clinic guarantees, alongside the necessary psychophysical stabilisation achieved through removal from the respective problematic social environment (domestic or professional), the working through of experienced burdens (e.g. specific conflicts, prolonged grief reactions, etc.), the finding of a new perspective for daily life or professional future, and the resource-oriented development work necessary for this.

Häufige Fragen

Answers to frequently asked questions about adjustment disorders and exhaustion states.

Patients, relatives, and referring physicians ask us recurring questions. Here you will find the most important answers summarised.

01.Is burnout an independent illness?

Exhaustion states, commonly known as burnout, are classified as adjustment disorders — as reactions to sustained overload. What matters less is the label than careful diagnosis, and a treatment that looks at triggers, symptoms, and one's own patterns together.

02.When should I seek help for sustained exhaustion?

When exhaustion, depressed mood, or inner tension persist for weeks, affect sleep, work, or relationships, and recovery is no longer possible, professional assessment is advisable — also to rule out or avert a depressive disorder.

03.Who covers the cost of treatment?

Admission is open to privately insured patients, those entitled to government allowance (Beihilfe), and self-pay patients. Some statutory health insurers (e.g. Techniker Krankenkasse and DAK) stipulate in their statutes that, under certain conditions, they may cover the costs of treatment at a purely private clinic up to the level of comparable rates at a hospital approved under Section 108 SGB V. We are happy to advise you during the initial telephone consultation.

04.How do I arrange an admission interview?

By telephone on +49 7083 748-0 (Mon–Fri 8:00–16:30) or via the Call-Back Service on the contact page. Our admissions office will respond within 24 hours with a proposed appointment for a detailed, no-obligation telephone consultation.
